How to play Singing Bowls?

The technique of beautifully and effectively playing your singing bowl requires not just skill and practice but also meditative imagination. Sound is a gift of god, and hearing is our most powerful sensory perception. Savoring the true essence of sound is the ultimate delight to the senses. A master player produces an enthralling ‘Aum’ vibration while playing these instruments. Aum is the cosmic sound created by the big bang-the original moment when universe was formed.

Some useful tips for playing Singing Tibetan Bowls are as follows:

·               Select your choice of Singing Tibetan Bowls according to the desired tone you want. Shape, weight and temperature of these bowls at the time of usage influences the sound emitted.

·               Sit comfortably. It is very important to be in a relaxed posture since discomfort causes irregular breathing, disturbing the random hand moment.

·               Large sized  Singing Tibetan Bowls are supposed to be placed on the floor, medium sized bowls on the lap, and small sized bowls on the palm of the hand. If the bowls are placed on the floor, thick layers of clothes or carpet mats must be put underneath to prevent friction and echo emission.

·               It is highly recommended that you play outdoors instead of indoors, preferably in a serene and natural ambience. The natural surrounding absorbs the sound waves radiated by the bowls, further relaxing your senses.

·               If you are a beginner, first of all start with slow and even vibration technique. Rub the mallet slowly and evenly in circular motion (also referred as ‘wineglass’ method) around the rim of the bowl. This produces a relaxing tune, effective for relieving stress.

·               Concentrate on your breathing pattern. Your breathing should go parallel to the flow of sound coming from the bowl. This will harmonize the mind.

·               Do not hold the mallet tightly or apply too much pressure from the hand, let it move loosely on the surface. The hand movement should correlate with the sound movement and breathing movement.

·               Thin Singing Tibetan Bowls should be played with leather wrapped mallets.

·               Always hold the mallet on the right hand.

·               Remember that it is the pressure on the surface that generates sound, not the speed or the force of the strike. So, start by practicing the skill of applying pressure in the beginning.

·               After mastering the skill of applying pressure, begin to speed up the hand movement, step by step.

·               If you wish to add intensity and depth to the sound, add some water on the bowl. But the exterior surface of the bowl mustn’t be wet while playing. And remember to wipe the water and moisture with a towel off the bowl after usage, otherwise it would cause rust.

·               Different types of mallet brings out unique sounds. Leather mallets produces low vibratory sound. Light weight plastic mallets produces high harmonic tune. Wooden mallet produces soft and moderate sound.

·               Vary the speed to achieve various intensity of sound. Go slower for less intensity, faster for high intensity.
